Western NC wedding photographer
Mountain weddings from the far western end of North Carolina.
Most Western NC wedding photographers live around Asheville. I live at the other end of the mountains, in Murphy, about two hours west. That puts me in the middle of a part of the state a lot of couples are discovering: Cherokee, Clay, Graham, and Macon counties, the Nantahala National Forest, and the Georgia line fifteen minutes south.
Western NC is a big place, and conditions change fast across it. A ceremony at 3,500 feet can be fifteen degrees cooler than one in the valley below it on the same afternoon. Fog sits on some ridges and skips others. A west-facing slope can lose the sun forty-five minutes before the official sunset. These things matter on a wedding day, and they're easier to plan for when you live in them.
Where I work
- Cherokee County: Murphy, Andrews, McGuire's Millrace Farm, The Highland Keep, Hawkesdene, the Folk School in Brasstown.
- Macon County and the Nantahala area: Nantahala Weddings & Events, Wayah Bald, Lake Nantahala, and the national forest.
- Clay and Graham counties: Hayesville, Lake Chatuge, Robbinsville, and the forests around Joyce Kilmer.
- Farther east: Asheville and beyond, when the wedding calls for it.
What mountain weddings ask of a photographer
Patience with weather. Some of my favorite pictures were taken in conditions that looked like a problem five minutes earlier.
Knowing the clock. Mountains take the sun early. I build timelines around the real light, not the number on the weather app.
Comfort off the pavement. Waterfalls, overlooks, dirt roads, fire towers. I'll carry the gear and find the path.
Working with me
I focus on the moments while you live them.
Because I live out here, my drive to your venue is usually shorter than your guests' drive.
A story from a Western NC wedding

Chloe and Alan got married on the lake, at home. They were great about stepping away from their guests for a few minutes so we could make some pictures. I directed them up onto a rock wall to get the angle and the light right, and the veil did the rest. Wedding photography works best as a collaboration: let your photographer direct you, and jump in with your own ideas too.

More from these mountains
Ashley and Josh spent extra hours of their wedding morning with me in the Nantahala National Forest: a waterfall, the Wayah Bald fire tower, and a perfectly cloudy day with mist and mystery and lots of moss. Read their story.
Caitlin and Jared dodged the rain in Asheville. We jumped out of the car, grabbed a few shots in front of the Biltmore, and got back in before the rain came back.

Annie and Josh got married at Kenmure in Flat Rock. At the end of the night, Josh held the door for Annie on their way out.
